Kleptocracies

So in vogue right now, aren’t they? Which brings me to the issue of land ownership and another political work (yawn) I completed a couple of years ago… It was selected for an exhibition running across three galleries (Beach Creative, Herne Bay, Creek Creative, Faversham and the Fishlab Gallery, Whitstable) called Map. But then Covid hit. So finally, after a hefty hiatus, I delivered the piece today. I’ve used 18th-century vellum and maps to create a map of the UK’s land ownership (1% own over 50%). Did you know that many of the largest landowners in the country today owe their standing to decisions made by the Norman king William almost 1,000 years ago? Seems a bit of a con to me – or is it survival of the greediest? So, I give you ‘Swindled: Common Wealth’, which is on view until April 3rd, 10-4pm at Beach Creative, Herne Bay.
